£1M Grant Helps Thousands Escape Homelessness in UK

Thousands of people experiencing homelessness across the UK are about to get powerful new support, thanks to a £1 million grant that will provide emergency assistance when they need it most.

The Julia Rausing Trust announced the two-year grant to St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity, a national organization helping people escape homelessness. The funding will support emergency grants that help people access and maintain safe housing.

The money arrives at a critical time. A 2025 survey found that 85% of frontline staff have seen increased demand on their services in the past year, and 83% say finding suitable housing for those they support has become harder.

The grant will fund two key programs. One provides rapid emergency financial assistance to help people across the UK access safe housing immediately. The other is a new pilot program that helps people keep their newly secured homes by providing ongoing support.

These emergency grants can make the difference between someone sleeping on the streets or in a safe bed. They cover essentials like rental deposits, moving costs, or urgent expenses that might otherwise force someone back into homelessness.

Duncan Shrubsole, Chief Executive of St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity, said the funding will change many lives. "Their funding will enable us to offer vital support to thousands of people experiencing homelessness over the next two years," he shared.

The Julia Rausing Trust was established in memory of philanthropist Julia Rausing, who died in 2024. The trust is donating £100 million to charities in its first year and will continue giving that amount annually.

When someone secures stable housing, the benefits extend far beyond a roof over their head. People can focus on finding work, reconnecting with family, managing health conditions, and rebuilding their lives. The frontline workers supporting them can help more people when emergency funds remove financial barriers quickly.

This £1 million investment represents the trust's largest donation to St Martin-in-the-Fields to date, building on previous support that has already helped vulnerable people find safety.
