Princess Kate Bonds With Cancer Survivor at Hospital Visit

When Princess Catherine walked into Royal Marsden Hospital this week, cancer survivor Hasna didn't see royalty. She saw a fellow mother who understood.

The two women sat together at the London hospital where both had received cancer treatment. They talked about motherhood, gratitude, and living with hope after diagnosis.

Hasna was told she had just 18 months to live when her breast cancer spread in 2006. Thanks to five clinical trials at Royal Marsden, she's been stable for five years. This week, she watched her granddaughter start nursery, a moment she once thought impossible.

"I didn't meet the Princess of Wales," Hasna told Good Housekeeping. "I met the woman. I met the mother."

During their conversation, the two mothers exchanged knowing looks and held hands. They discussed how clinical trials gave Hasna her life back and how holistic care supports healing alongside medical treatment.

Catherine, 44, visited the hospital to see how funds from her National Three Peaks Challenge are helping patients. Last June, she climbed the three highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales within 24 hours to raise money for holistic cancer care.

Why This Inspires

Catherine's return to the hospital as a patient advocate shows how personal experience can fuel meaningful change. She's using her platform to highlight something many cancer survivors know: healing requires more than just medical treatment.

The Princess emphasized the importance of nature, nutrition, and emotional support during cancer treatment. "It made a big difference to me and it made a huge difference to lots of patients who I've spoken to," she said.

The funds raised will support The Centre for Holistic Wellbeing and Recovery at Royal Marsden. The center will integrate physical, emotional, spiritual, and social wellbeing into cancer care.

For Hasna, the hospital transformed her from "just a hospital number" into a person. "The staff knows me as Hasna," she said. That personal connection, combined with groundbreaking clinical trials, gave her years she wasn't supposed to have.

Chief Nurse Mairead Griffin said the Princess's visit "gave a real boost to patients, staff and the wider hospital community." Patients like Natalie shared how the hospital's approach supported not just their physical health but helped them "navigate life with cancer."

Catherine became Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in 2025, alongside Prince William, following her own cancer journey. Two mothers who looked into each other's eyes and found shared knowledge are now both celebrating life beyond diagnosis.
