The expansion will start with Motorola's flagship phones before rolling out to foldable devices like the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra. The Ultra would become the first flip phone to officially run GrapheneOS, opening up privacy-first technology to a whole new form factor.

GrapheneOS has strict requirements for the devices it supports, focusing on hardware-level security features that protect user data. The organization said Motorola's 2026 phones nearly met their standards but lacked mature support for critical security features like hardware memory tagging.

That's changing with the next generation of Qualcomm chips. The upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite processors will include the advanced security features GrapheneOS requires, which is why 2027 Motorola phones are the target.

The partnership represents a shift in how GrapheneOS operates too. While the organization has always handled the technical work of adapting its software to Pixel phones, Motorola is doing much of the heavy lifting for its own devices. The GrapheneOS Foundation noted that Motorola "is doing a large portion of the work of porting GrapheneOS to their devices."

This collaboration could reshape smartphone privacy for everyday users. Until now, running GrapheneOS meant buying a Google Pixel phone, which felt ironic for people trying to escape Google's ecosystem.

Motorola's involvement brings privacy-focused software to devices that compete with Pixel phones on features and price. More hardware options mean more people can choose security and privacy without sacrificing the phone experience they want.

The organizations first announced their partnership in March 2026, promising to "work to strengthen smartphone security." Now those plans are taking concrete shape with specific timelines and device commitments.

GrapheneOS confirmed it will continue supporting Google's Pixel line, including the upcoming Pixel 11 series. The organization's work proves that Android can exist without Google's data collection while remaining secure and functional.

More affordable Motorola devices could eventually join the lineup too, though that depends on Qualcomm improving security in cheaper chips and Motorola extending software support commitments beyond their current two-year standard.
