Producer Conquers Fear of Flying, Saves 58 Shelter Pets

Monica Matute spent years avoiding airplanes, but when she learned 58 shelter animals needed urgent help, her fear suddenly seemed smaller than their need.

The Dodo producer joined Pilots to the Rescue, a volunteer organization that flies shelter pets from overcrowded facilities to areas where they have better adoption chances. The mission took her from New York to multiple states, each mile carrying dogs and cats away from euthanasia and toward loving homes.

Matute's aviophobia had kept her grounded for most of her life. But working at The Dodo, where she tells animal rescue stories daily, gave her a front-row seat to the shelter overcrowding crisis happening across America.

Pilots to the Rescue fills a critical gap in animal welfare. Many shelters in densely populated areas like New York face heartbreaking capacity limits, while shelters in other states have space and eager adopters. The challenge is simply getting the animals there.

Volunteer pilots donate their time, planes, and fuel to bridge that distance. Each flight can save dozens of lives that would otherwise be lost to overcrowding.

During the flight, Matute focused on the furry passengers around her. Every bark and meow reminded her why she stepped onto that plane despite her racing heart.

All 58 animals now have foster homes, and many have already found their forever families.
