Queen Camilla Gives Every UK 6th Grader a Fantasy Book

Queen Camilla is marking her 79th birthday with a gift to thousands of children instead of receiving presents herself.

Buckingham Palace announced Friday that the Queen arranged for every Year 6 and P6 student across the UK to receive a special edition of "Impossible Creatures" by Katherine Rundell this Christmas. The fantasy adventure follows two kids named Christopher and Mal as they team up to save magical islands from a villain.

The book choice isn't random. "Impossible Creatures" won Waterstones Book of the Year in 2023 and the British Book Awards Children's Fiction Book of the Year in 2024. Each copy will feature a royal stamp on the cover and include a personal message from Camilla calling it a "brilliant fantasy" by "one of my favourite writers."

Children's literacy has become one of Camilla's signature causes since becoming Queen. She serves as patron of the National Literacy Trust, which is partnering with the palace to distribute the books through schools, libraries, and community programs.

The giveaway kicks off the National Year of Reading 2026, an initiative designed to inspire the joy of reading and make it part of everyday life. The timing puts books in kids' hands right when they're breaking for winter holidays.

The Ripple Effect

Camilla's literacy work extends far beyond this birthday gift. She also supports BookTrust and Coram Beanstalk, charities focused on getting kids reading. During COVID lockdowns, she founded The Queen's Reading Room as an Instagram book club. It has since grown into a full charity hosting events and providing free educational content.

Research shows that children who read for pleasure perform better academically and develop stronger empathy. By putting an exciting fantasy novel directly into the hands of every sixth grader, the Queen is creating thousands of potential new readers at a crucial age.

The gesture sends a powerful message: reading matters enough to celebrate on a birthday. While there will be a traditional 41-gun salute in Green Park, the real celebration is happening in classrooms and homes across the country.
