Quick-Thinking Police Save 3 From South Australia Floods

When three people drove into floodwaters during South Australia's heaviest August rainfall on record, quick-thinking police made sure everyone walked away unharmed.

South Australia experienced a drenching weekend, with some towns seeing rainfall they'd never recorded before in August. Lenswood received 110 millimeters while Coromandel East got 101 millimeters, creating dangerous conditions across the region.

Early Monday morning around 4:50am, two people in a car at Hillier found themselves trapped when floodwaters surrounded their vehicle at the intersection of Wingate and Winzor roads. Both managed to climb out through the windows and reach the roadside safely.

While police were helping the first two people, a second driver entered the same flooded area and also became stuck. Officers quickly guided him to safety before the water could rise further.

Both vehicles were swept away into what's believed to be the Gawler River, but the important part is simple: zero injuries. Senior Constable Daniel Isaacson confirmed that while the cars are likely "long gone," all three motorists made it out safely thanks to fast emergency response.

The Bright Side

The State Emergency Service fielded more than 530 requests for assistance throughout the weekend storm, mostly from Adelaide's northern suburbs. Despite the overwhelming number of calls and record-breaking rainfall, emergency crews worked around the clock to keep South Australians safe.

The weekend brought significant disruptions including road closures on Port Wakefield Road and Gorge Road at Paracombe due to flooding and fallen rocks. Commuters faced detours and delays, yet the coordinated response from police, SES volunteers, and emergency services meant people were protected when it mattered most.

When nature delivers its worst, South Australia's emergency responders showed up with their best, turning what could have been tragic headlines into stories of successful rescues and communities looking out for each other.
