Rare Harper Lee First Edition Donated to London Charity Shop

A literary treasure was hiding in plain sight among a box of books donated to a charity shop in west London.

Shop manager Olivia Haysman-Walker found a first US edition of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird while sorting through donations at Oxfam's Portobello Road bookshop. The 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel could have easily been overlooked among the many books in the donation box.

Haysman-Walker and her team recognized the classic title and decided to take a closer look. They quickly realized they had something special on their hands.

"The dust jacket showed its age, and although it was worn around the edges, the pages inside were in beautiful condition," Haysman-Walker said. The discovery happened during Second Hand September, Oxfam's annual campaign that encourages people to shop second-hand.

The British Library acquired the rare find, where it will become part of the institution's national collection. This means future generations can study and appreciate this piece of literary history.

Lee's novel tells the story of lawyer Atticus Finch defending Tom Robinson, a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman in 1934 Alabama. The powerful story about racial injustice and childhood innocence has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and been translated into 40 languages.
