Record-Breaking Dog Balances Books at World's Oldest Bookshop

A border collie with four world records to his name just had the perfect birthday celebration at the world's oldest operating bookshop.

Leonard Lee and his owner Teresa Hanula traveled from the USA to Portugal to mark the dog's eighth birthday with a special visit to Bertrand in Lisbon. The historic bookstore, which opened its doors in 1732, became an instant playground for Leonard's unique talent.

Staff and customers watched in amazement as Leonard walked through the aisles with a book perfectly balanced on his head. People pulled out their phones to capture the moment, smiling and giggling as the charismatic pup worked the crowd like a pro.

"Leonard thrives on attention," Teresa explained. "He is an absolute ham for the camera and loves interacting with people."

The birthday trip wasn't just about bookshops. Leonard spent his special week kayaking around the Algarve, visiting scenic viewpoints, and even painting a Portuguese tile at a Lisbon restaurant. He obtained his EU pet passport during the visit to make future European adventures easier.

Teresa chose Portugal specifically because the Douro River region features a natural figure eight formation, with the best viewpoint named after Saint Leonard. "It felt like a natural choice for his birthday celebration," she said.

Leonard currently holds four world records, including walking 17.30 meters with a book balanced on his head in one minute, performing 22 basketball slam dunks in 60 seconds, and climbing stairs both forward and backward while balancing books. He's already practicing for his next record attempt between sightseeing adventures.

"Leonard is a true thinker and problem-solver," Teresa shared. "Whether he is painting or balancing objects, he interacts with the world in a way that feels almost human."
