Red Cross Seeks Volunteers During National Volunteer Week
The American Red Cross is celebrating the 4,000+ Alabama volunteers who make up 90% of its workforce while recruiting helpers for roles from disaster response to blood drives. National Volunteer Week runs April 19-25. #
When disaster strikes at 2 a.m., it's volunteers who show up to help families who've lost everything to a house fire.
The American Red Cross is using National Volunteer Week to shine a spotlight on the everyday heroes who power its mission. In Alabama alone, more than 4,000 volunteers staff blood drives, support military families, and respond to emergencies around the clock.
Volunteers make up 90% of the Red Cross workforce nationwide. These aren't paid professionals, they're neighbors who decided to answer the call when their community needed help.
"Generations of American Red Cross volunteers have come together to deliver care and hope in the face of emergencies," said Darius Jackson, Regional Volunteer Services Officer. "Join this generation of volunteers working together to bring comfort and relief to people in need."
The organization is actively recruiting for several key roles. Disaster Action Team members respond to personal crises like home fires, arriving when families need support most.

Shelter Resident Transition Associates help people in shelters find pathways to stable housing. Blood Donor Ambassadors make sure donors feel appreciated while they're saving lives.
Blood Transportation Specialists fill a critical behind-the-scenes role, rushing blood products to hospitals when patients need them urgently. The work happens 24/7, and volunteers make it possible.
THE RIPPLE EFFECT
Every volunteer creates waves of impact far beyond their individual actions. A single Blood Donor Ambassador might help 50 donors feel comfortable giving blood in one shift, and each donation can save up to three lives. That's 150 lives touched by one person showing up.
Disaster Action Team volunteers often become the first friendly face families see after losing their home. That moment of compassion ripples forward, giving people hope to rebuild not just their houses but their lives.
National Volunteer Week runs from April 19 through April 25, but the Red Cross needs helpers year-round. Anyone interested can find opportunities and sign up at redcross.org.
The need is constant, but so is the opportunity to make a real difference right where you live.
