Red Sox Star Rutschman Uses Injury Time to Bond with Team

Being traded for the first time in your career could feel overwhelming, but Adley Rutschman is making the most of an unexpected advantage.

The three-time All-Star catcher joined the Boston Red Sox just before Monday's trade deadline after spending his first four-plus seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. But instead of jumping straight into game action, he's on the injured list with left wrist inflammation.

Rutschman is using the downtime wisely. He's already swinging a bat and preparing to contribute by studying his new pitchers and planning in-depth conversations about how they work.

"I've seen a lot of these guys pitch and faced them," Rutschman said Tuesday at Fenway Park. "I kind of understand how they attack guys but I'm definitely going to have some more in-depth conversations, just make sure that we're on the same page and it flows smoothly when we get out there."

The timing of the trade works in everyone's favor. The Red Sox won 23 of their last 26 games and sit firmly in wild card position, 5.5 games out of the division lead. Boston gave up top prospects to acquire Rutschman, so they're not rushing his recovery.

Interim manager Chad Tracy said the medical staff is working closely with Rutschman to map out his return. The team is hopeful he'll be back behind the plate soon, but they're prioritizing long-term health over immediate availability.

His positive attitude extends beyond baseball mechanics. "Just from playing here, the city loves baseball," Rutschman said about Boston. "It always has a great atmosphere and I'm excited to play in it."

The Red Sox couldn't be happier with his mindset. "I think it's a strong statement to the group with a player like that," Tracy said. "We went out and got a huge addition to our lineup and behind the plate."

When Rutschman does return, he'll step into a lineup chasing October baseball with chemistry already built and a clear plan in place.
