Solar panels and wind turbines generating clean electricity against blue sky

Renewables Hit 32% of Global Electricity in 2024

🤯 Mind Blown

Clean energy just hit a major milestone, generating nearly a third of the world's electricity for the first time. Solar and wind power led the charge, growing seven times faster than fossil fuels.

For the first time in history, renewable energy sources produced almost a third of all electricity worldwide, marking a turning point in the global shift away from fossil fuels.

Clean energy generation jumped 9.8% in 2024, reaching 31.7% of global electricity production according to new data from the International Renewable Energy Agency. That growth rate crushed the 1.4% increase seen in fossil fuel power, showing renewables aren't just growing but accelerating past traditional energy sources.

Solar and wind power drove most of the gains. Together, these technologies helped add a record 693 gigawatts of new renewable capacity in 2025 alone, bringing the global total to 5.2 terawatts. That means renewables now make up nearly half of all electricity generation capacity on Earth.

Asia led the charge with a 14.3% increase in renewable generation, while the Middle East saw the biggest percentage jump at 17.3%. Europe, North America, and South America all posted solid gains between 3% and 7%, showing the transition is truly global.

The data gets even better when you look at new construction. Renewables accounted for 85.7% of all new electricity capacity added in 2025, meaning nearly nine out of every ten new power plants built worldwide runs on clean energy instead of fossil fuels.

The Ripple Effect

This shift isn't just good for the climate. Countries investing in renewables are seeing stronger energy security, lower electricity costs, and more resilient power grids that don't depend on fuel imports.

Francesco La Camera, who leads IRENA, pointed out that the technology works and the economics make sense. The challenge now is expanding clean electricity into transportation, heating, and industry where fossil fuels still dominate.

To meet global climate goals, renewables need to reach 78% of electricity generation by 2035. That means roughly doubling the current share in just ten years, requiring growth about 2.5 times faster than today's already record-breaking pace.

The tools to get there already exist and keep getting cheaper every year.
