Rescue Dog Magpie Saves Sea Turtles on Texas Beach

A rescue dog who once needed saving is now returning the favor to thousands of baby sea turtles along the Texas coast.

Magpie, a one-year-old mixed-breed pup, has a job that sounds almost too adorable to be real: she spends her days sniffing out buried sea turtle nests on South Padre Island. When she finds one, she sits on the spot, signaling conservationists to carefully move the eggs to safer locations where hatchlings can reach the ocean more easily.

The idea came to Wendy Knight, CEO of Sea Turtle, Inc., after meeting someone who trains dogs in Africa to detect elephant tusks and catch poachers. She wondered why researchers were using "so much human capital" to find turtle nests when coyotes could do it in minutes.

That spark of inspiration led to Project D.U.N.E. (Detection of Unknown Nests and Eggs), funded with a $100,000 donation from Tito's Handmade Vodka through their Love, Tito's initiative. The company loved the full-circle story: they started by rescuing stray dogs at their distillery, and now one rescue dog is helping rescue countless others.

Finding the right dog wasn't easy. The team interviewed candidates from four animal rescues over four months, looking for specific qualities: high energy, short hair for beach life, mid-sized, and most importantly, hardworking with urgency.

Magpie, rescued from Satchel's Last Resort, checked every box. After six weeks of intensive training in Florida with trainer Pepe, the pup earned rave reviews. "This is the smartest dog I have ever trained," Pepe told Knight midway through the program.

Now, when handler Lindsay gives Magpie the command "Go find your babies!" the clever canine gets to work. She's been on the job since early April, when sea turtle breeding season began.
