Researchers Create Hemp Plastic That Rivals PET

Plastic pollution finally has a green competitor worth watching. Researchers have successfully created a hemp-based plastic that performs just as well as the PET plastic found in water bottles and food containers.

The breakthrough comes as the world drowns in 400 million tons of plastic waste each year, with traditional plastics taking centuries to break down. Hemp plastic offers something different: it's made from a renewable crop that grows quickly without pesticides, and it can biodegrade under the right conditions.

Countries like Canada and many in Europe have already expanded hemp farming regulations, recognizing its environmental benefits. As production costs decrease with scale, hemp plastic could become competitive with petroleum versions within the next decade.
