Retired General Turns Army Uniforms Into 40,000 School Bags

When Major General Ashim Kohli retired from the Indian Army after 37 years, he faced a problem shared by thousands of veterans: what to do with at least 10 old uniforms that felt too sacred to discard. Throwing them away felt wrong, but storing faded fabric forever didn't make sense either.

His solution became something far bigger than a personal dilemma. Along with his daughter, Kohli founded the Sewaj Neesim Foundation with a mission called "Vardi ka Samman" (honoring the uniform).

The process is remarkably thoughtful. Good-quality uniform fabric gets washed, cut, and hand-stitched into sturdy school bags for underprivileged children. Torn or faded portions are shredded into fibers and transformed into masks and diaries.

Not a single thread goes to waste.

The Indian Army then distributes these bags to children in insurgency-affected and underserved areas. The uniforms that once protected India's borders now protect children's dreams, carrying books instead of soldiers.

Word spread quickly across military communities. Soldiers from across India began donating their retired uniforms, each one costing about 600 rupees to recycle. Kohli emphasizes this isn't about profit; it's about continuing to serve.

In a world built on throwing things away, Kohli shows us that respect means finding new life in what already exists. His initiative proves that service doesn't need a rank, a paycheck, or applause to continue.

To date, over 40,000 uniforms have been recycled through nearly 10 donation drives each year. Each bag carries a powerful message: duty doesn't end when the uniform comes off.

His vision asks something simple of all of us: what could we reuse, repurpose, or share that might change someone's life?
