Volunteer Lorean Sindelar conducting vision screening with young student at Texas school

Retired Teacher Screens 688 Kids for Vision Problems

🦸 Hero Alert

A Texas Lions Club volunteer conducted nearly 700 free vision screenings for children this school year, catching eye problems early enough to fix them. Her work spans three counties and provides free glasses to families in need.

Lorean Sindelar believes the earlier you catch a child's vision problem, the better chance you have to fix it for life.

The retired teacher has spent 30 years making Kingsland, Texas her home and nearly that long volunteering with the local Lions Club chapter. This past school year alone, she and three other certified volunteers screened 688 children across Burnet, Llano, and San Saba counties.

The screenings are completely free to schools. When kids need help, the Lions Club steps up again with free eye exams and glasses for families who can't afford them.

"If we can reach children from infant to seven years old, we can detect astigmatism, lazy eye, and all the other sight issues that can be corrected early on," Sindelar explained. Vision is a major focus of Lions International, and the Kingsland chapter takes that mission seriously.

Her dedication earned her the 2024 Lion of the Year award. But she's not slowing down.

Sindelar chairs the chapter's annual golf tournament at Lighthouse Country Club, happening April 2. The fundraiser supports Meals on Wheels, school lunch programs, and the vision screening initiative. She also helps run monthly Bunco nights and serves pancake breakfasts on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

The Ripple Effect

Every child who gets screened represents a chance to change a life trajectory. Vision problems can look like learning disabilities or behavioral issues in young students. Catching them early means kids can see the board, read books without headaches, and keep up with their classmates.

The Lions Club's work extends beyond individual families. By partnering with schools across three counties, they're building a safety net that catches problems entire districts might otherwise miss.

Anyone can join the Lions Club at their weekly Thursday meetings from noon to 1 p.m. at the Kingsland Library. For families needing vision screening or help with glasses, Sindelar welcomes calls at 325-388-0720.

One volunteer, 688 screenings, and countless futures made a little brighter.
