Retirees Return to University of Limerick at 65+
University of Limerick just celebrated its first graduates from a groundbreaking program that welcomes people 65 and older back into college classrooms alongside traditional students. These lifelong learners are proving it's never too late to hit the books.
Retirement just got a lot more interesting at University of Limerick, where the first cohort of Age Friendly University learners received certificates for completing real college courses alongside undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The program, designed specifically for retired adults and people 65 and over, requires no prior qualifications or degrees. Participants simply choose modules from existing undergraduate and postgraduate programs that interest them and dive in.
Elma Gourrege, one of the inaugural learners and now a passionate program advocate, took on Public Health Nutrition with everything it required. She completed assignments, delivered presentations, participated in classroom discussions, and conducted independent research just like her younger classmates.
"Being part of the Age Friendly University programme has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my retirement," Elma shared at the ceremony. "Studying alongside younger students showed me that generations can learn so much from one another."
The intergenerational aspect created something special in those classrooms. Younger students gained wisdom and perspective from older learners, while the retirees brought fresh energy and curiosity to subjects they'd always wanted to explore.

The Ripple Effect
The program's first-year success has exceeded all expectations, with exceptional demand for modules across different subjects. That enthusiasm convinced university leaders to expand the initiative in its second year, welcoming even more older adults into the campus community.
UL Provost Professor Ann Ledwith noted the broader impact at the certificate ceremony. "Lifelong learning plays an important role in supporting our wellbeing and helping us continue to grow and adapt in a rapidly changing world," she said while congratulating the graduates.
For many attendees, the ceremony marked their first return to formal education in decades. Others had never experienced university learning at all until now, making this milestone even more meaningful.
The experience brought participants far more than academic knowledge. They formed lasting friendships, gained confidence in their learning abilities, and discovered a renewed sense of purpose that often fades after retirement.
Professor Joachim Fischer, who co-chairs the Age Friendly University Committee, thanked the learners for making the program's launch such a success. Their genuine engagement proved that older adults have a strong appetite for challenging academic work when given the opportunity.
University of Limerick is showing that college campuses should be seats of learning for people of all ages, not just the young.
