Revolution Wind Completes 65-Turbine Offshore Wind Farm

The final turbine is up, and New England just got a major clean energy boost.

Revolution Wind has completed installation of all 65 turbines off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut, creating a 704-megawatt offshore wind farm that's been quietly powering the region since March. The $6.2 billion project overcame significant obstacles to reach this milestone, including multiple federal stop-work orders that were later overturned by judges.

The timing couldn't be better for the Northeast. New England's electrical grid has been stretched thin during extreme weather events, and Revolution Wind is already proving its value.

During Winter Storm Fern earlier this year, offshore wind farms kept electricity flowing when the region needed it most. The turbines excel in cold weather, providing steady power during the season's highest demand periods.

Then came summer's record heat wave in July. Revolution Wind and other offshore installations delivered carbon-free electricity that allowed utilities to avoid firing up dirty, expensive oil-burning backup plants. Residents got reliable power without the pollution or premium prices.

The Ripple Effect

Revolution Wind joins a growing fleet of operational offshore wind farms serving the East Coast. South Fork Wind near New York and Vineyard Wind 1 off Martha's Vineyard are already fully complete and generating power.

The massive 2.6-gigawatt Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project started delivering electricity in March and should finish construction next year. Two more farms, Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind, are on track to begin full operations in 2027.

Together, these projects represent a fundamental shift in how the Northeast gets its electricity. States in the region have committed to ambitious climate goals, and offshore wind provides the clean generation capacity they need to meet growing demand.

The Revolution Wind completion also demonstrates that complex infrastructure projects can succeed even in challenging political environments. When federal agencies issued stop-work orders, state attorneys general and project developers successfully challenged them in court, allowing construction to continue.

For Rhode Island and Connecticut residents, the benefits are already visible. The wind farm strengthens grid reliability, diversifies the power supply, and provides price stability compared to fossil fuel alternatives that swing with global commodity markets.

The project's completion proves that offshore wind technology works at scale in American waters. Each successful installation builds expertise, refines construction techniques, and demonstrates the reliability that will be needed as more projects come online.
