Rice Paper Battery Powers Medical Devices You Can Swallow

Imagine swallowing a tiny robot that monitors your health, then simply digests it when the job is done. That future just got closer thanks to a battery you can safely eat.

Researchers at MIT built a power source using materials the body can absorb, including electrodes made from magnesium and molybdenum. These are the same metallic micronutrients your body already needs in small amounts. The breakthrough solves a major problem with current swallowable devices, which can cause chemical burns or release toxic materials if they break open.

The secret ingredient came from an unexpected place. "We were partly inspired by candies that have an edible rice paper wrapper," says Giovanni Traverso, a mechanical engineer and gastroenterologist who led the study. The team coated their battery in a cellulose material that dissolves over time, just like those sweet wrappers, then dipped it in beeswax to protect it from stomach acid.

The batteries started dissolving within two weeks in simulated stomach fluid and completely broke down after several months. But they lasted long enough to do important work.

Testing in pigs showed real promise. One device with a radio tracker successfully transmitted signals from inside the animals' bodies to a reader outside. Another device electrically stimulated pig stomachs and triggered changes in ghrelin, a hormone that regulates hunger.

The Ripple Effect

This technology could reshape how we treat disease. Instead of invasive surgeries or permanent implants, doctors might prescribe a capsule you swallow that delivers electrical impulses to regulate your digestive system or monitors your health from the inside. These "electroceutical" devices could help manage everything from appetite disorders to chronic conditions by tapping into the gut-brain connection.

The applications go beyond stomachs too. Any place in the body that needs temporary electronic monitoring or treatment could benefit from devices that do their job and then harmlessly disappear.

The research team published their findings in Nature Chemical Engineering, marking a major step toward personalized medicine that works with your body instead of requiring removal later. No toxic metals, no plastic fragments, no surgeries to retrieve spent devices.

Medical technology just got a lot easier to swallow.
