Riverside Wins $150K in Clean Energy Grants

Riverside, California is proving that going green can grow an economy, attracting nearly $150,000 in new grants and national recognition for its clean energy leadership.

The city recently scored four major wins. Resilient Cities Catalyst selected Riverside as one of only four California projects to receive $20,000 in seed funding plus free expert help through the California Resilience Implementation Accelerator. The city competed against more than 60 applications statewide.

That money will support the Northside Agriculture Innovation Center, a community project combining solar power, farming technology, and job training to help urban agriculture survive extreme heat and drought. The center aims to strengthen food security while creating local career opportunities in one of Riverside's own neighborhoods.

Bloomberg Philanthropies added another $50,000 through its global Youth Climate Action Fund, picking Riverside to join 300 cities across 34 countries. The funding empowers residents ages 15 to 24 to design and launch their own climate solutions. Cities that succeed could unlock an additional $100,000 later.

ICLEI USA and the Coalition for Green Capital awarded Riverside $76,042 to build partnerships that expand clean energy infrastructure. Riverside was the only California city chosen for this funding, which could open doors to millions more in future renewable energy projects.

Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson says the investments reflect years of deliberate strategy. "National organizations are recognizing that leadership and choosing to invest in our city because they see Riverside as a place where innovative ideas can become real-world solutions," she said.

The Ripple Effect

Riverside's success shows how cities can become climate innovation hubs while boosting their local economies. By attracting outside funding and expertise, the city creates jobs in green technology and renewable energy without shouldering all the costs alone. Young people gain skills for emerging industries, farmers get tools to adapt to changing weather, and the entire community benefits from cleaner air and lower energy costs.

The approach also positions Riverside as a testing ground for solutions that could spread to other cities facing similar challenges. When one community proves a climate project works, it becomes easier for others to secure funding and public support for the same ideas.

City Councilmember Steven Robillard points to Riverside's track record of turning plans into action. "We have intentionally built a culture of innovation around sustainability, and organizations across the country are recognizing Riverside as a city capable of turning ambitious ideas into measurable results," he said.

The grants build on years of investment in renewable energy, workforce training, and international clean technology partnerships that have established Riverside as a leader in the green economy transition.
