Rivian R2 Gets 335-Mile Range and Fast Charging

Rivian's upcoming R2 electric SUV just got its official EPA certification, and the numbers show this mid-size vehicle could be a serious game-changer for affordable electric transportation.

The R2 Launch Edition will travel up to 335 miles on a single charge with standard 21-inch wheels. That's even slightly better than the 330 miles Rivian originally promised when they announced the vehicle.

For drivers who want to venture off-road, the all-terrain tire option only drops range to 314 miles. That's a remarkably small trade-off for genuine adventure capability.

The charging performance is equally impressive. The R2 can add significant range during a quick meal or rest stop, with peak charging speeds of 217 kilowatts and the ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 29 minutes.

Rivian kept the vehicle practical too, with a tested weight of 5,250 pounds. That's a full 1,300 pounds lighter than its larger sibling, the R1S, which helps explain the improved efficiency.

One concern that briefly worried electric vehicle enthusiasts has already been put to rest. Early certification documents suggested the R2 might lack a heat pump, which is crucial for maintaining range in cold weather.

Rivian quickly confirmed that all Launch Edition R2 vehicles will include heat pumps as standard equipment. This means drivers in colder climates won't have to worry about excessive range loss during winter months.

The Ripple Effect

The R2's strong specifications matter beyond just one vehicle. Rivian is proving that electric SUVs can offer real-world practicality without compromise, even at more accessible price points than luxury EVs.

The vehicle comes standard with the North American Charging Standard connector, giving owners access to the largest charging networks. Rivian also operates its own Adventure Network charging stations and recently acquired the popular route-planning app A Better Route Planner.

These moves show how the entire electric vehicle ecosystem is maturing. Companies are thinking beyond just building cars to creating complete ownership experiences that remove the anxiety from going electric.
