RNLI Receives Record £180M in Legacy Gifts, Saving Lives

A single generous gift left in someone's will has helped Britain's Royal National Lifeboat Institution reach new heights in funding the rescues that save lives at sea.

The maritime charity received £180 million in legacy donations in 2025, including one "notably significant" gift that ranks among the largest in its 200-year history. While the exact amount remains private per the donor's wishes, the contribution helped drive a nearly £30 million increase in legacy giving compared to the previous year.

The impact of these gifts goes straight to the frontlines. According to RNLI, six out of every 10 rescues they perform are only possible because of gifts left in wills by supporters who wanted their legacy to protect others.

Total income for the charity reached £287 million in 2025, up from £251 million the year before. Beyond legacies, everyday donations also grew by 6% to £75.3 million, showing strong public support for the volunteer crews who risk their lives in stormy seas.

The charity is putting that money to work immediately. They spent £9 million more on lifeboats, property and equipment in 2025, part of a deliberate push to modernize their rescue capabilities. Chief executive Peter Sparkes announced plans to replace aging lifeboats with faster, more responsive models as part of the organization's 200th anniversary strategy.

Every bequest creates waves of impact that extend far beyond a single donor's lifetime. That £180 million in legacy gifts will fund rescues for years to come, helping volunteer crews reach swimmers, sailors and fishermen in their most desperate moments.

The charity also reports that future legacy pledges remain "healthy," meaning the pipeline of support will continue flowing. These are gifts from teachers, nurses, sailors and everyday Britons who spent their lives near the coast and wanted to give back to the service that kept their communities safe.

With 1,924 dedicated staff supporting thousands of volunteers at lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland, RNLI continues its mission into its third century of service.
