Roanoke's Eureka Park Reopens for Juneteenth Reunion

After a year away for renovations, Roanoke's historic Eureka Park welcomes the community back for its annual Juneteenth Family Reunion. The newly renovated recreation center has been a cornerstone of Black community life for generations.

A beloved community gathering returns home this weekend as Roanoke celebrates Juneteenth at the freshly renovated Eureka Park, a place where generations of Black residents grew up playing, learning, and building lifelong bonds.

The Roanoke Cultural Collective started hosting the Juneteenth Family Reunion at Eureka Park in 2021, when Juneteenth became a federal holiday. Last year, renovations forced them to relocate, but the timing couldn't be better for their return.

"Eureka Park holds a special place in all of our hearts," said Jordan Bell of the Roanoke Cultural Collective. "This is where many of us grew up, went to the rec center, played basketball here, did many things here."

The park carries deep historical significance for Roanoke's Northwest community. During segregation, when African Americans faced restricted access to public spaces, Eureka Park became their gathering place. The recreation center gave countless kids a safe space to play, study, and dream without traveling across town.

"After segregation, when African Americans started to move to this area, this was the park that African Americans came to quite often," Bell explained.

The Ripple Effect

Amanda Marie Spivey sees the renovated center as more than just updated facilities. It represents continued investment in spaces where Black youth can see themselves reflected and celebrated in their own neighborhood.

"We want to just make sure that we're celebrating us in our area," Spivey said. "There is something for everyone. There are so many adults, probably my age too, that got their start in some way, shape or form by rec centers like this."

Organizer Robyn Mitchell calls this year's event both a celebration and a homecoming. "This is a family reunion and it's a homecoming in a sense as we were away from this park for one year. So it's going to be like a full circle moment bringing everybody here to gather and convene again."

The reunion welcomes everyone to join the celebration on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., with free food and activities for all ages proving that the best homecomings are the ones where everyone's invited.
