Robots fighting in boxing ring at outdoor fundraiser event for animal rescue organizations

Robot Boxing Match Raises $500K for Animal Rescues

😊 Feel Good

A tech company turned robot fights into a force for good, raising half a million dollars for three animal rescue organizations. The May event in San Clemente proved fundraising doesn't have to follow the traditional playbook.

When 90-pound robots Red and Gold entered the ring in San Clemente, their punches and kicks were landing blows for a cause that matters: saving animals in need.

Sonance Cares, the charitable arm of a local tech company, hosted Rumble for Rescue on May 30. The robot boxing event has raised $500,000 so far for three nonprofit organizations dedicated to animal welfare.

"I think sometimes philanthropy gets put into a very traditional box," said Scott Struthers, Sonance co-founder and creator of Sonance Cares. "We wanted to ask: 'How do we create something that makes people excited to show up?'"

Four fighting robots from San Francisco's Robot Entertainment Kombat battled it out while guests enjoyed the Matrix-meets-cyberpunk themed event. Bob the Robot, Sonance Cares' humanoid ambassador, mingled with attendees before the main matches began.

The funds raised through silent auctions and paddle raising will support Pet Project Foundation, Friends of Orange County's Homeless Pets, and Furever Family Non-profit Veterinary Care. Each organization tackles animal rescue from a different angle, from preventing shelter overcrowding to providing low-cost spay and neuter services.

Pet Project Foundation keeps the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter operating as a no-kill facility. Over 42 years, they've saved more than 20,000 animals, including 3,000 through their rescue mission program that pulls at-risk animals from overcrowded shelters.

"This kind of support gives us the ability to say yes to more animals who need help," said Cindy Dobbins, president of Friends of Orange County's Homeless Pets. The donations cover medical care, vaccines, emergency treatments, and the daily needs of rescued dogs waiting for their forever homes.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond the money raised, the event created unexpected connections. Rescue organizations met potential long-term supporters and partners who share their passion for animal welfare.

Heidi Muther, executive director of Pet Project Foundation, noted that every donated dollar goes directly to animal care since the organization runs entirely on volunteers. The funding provides surgeries, medications, nutritious food, and life-saving emergency treatments.

Since launching in 2022, Sonance Cares has supported over 30 nonprofits across four pillars: people, planet, animals, and communities. Their approach proves that innovation and entertainment can create powerful momentum for causes that matter.

When technology meets compassion in the ring, everyone wins.
