Romania Plants 115% More Trees Than Recovery Plan Goal

Romania just proved that environmental promises can become reality, planting 15% more trees than it committed to under its National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The country transformed 20,716 hectares into thriving forests, surpassing its 18,000-hectare target. That's roughly the size of 29,000 soccer fields now covered in trees that will clean the air and protect communities for generations.

The achievement didn't stop there. Romania completed 109 tree nurseries to keep the momentum going, 19 more than planned. It also created 13 hectares of new urban forests in cities where people need green spaces most.

Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu celebrated the teams who made it happen. "These are concrete results, obtained at a sustained pace, which contribute to protecting the soil, cleaner air and increasing resilience to drought, heatwaves and floods," she said.

The project brought together an inspiring mix of participants. Local governments, private citizens, universities, and community groups all pitched in to plant trees in their regions. Some created protective forest belts around towns, while others focused on agricultural areas and roads that needed shade and wind protection.

The Ripple Effect

The nearly $360 million investment is already paying dividends beyond just the trees themselves. The new forests will help Romania fight drought, absorb floodwaters during heavy rains, and cool cities during brutal summer heat waves.

Four counties led the charge with massive plantings. Dolj County planted over 3,100 hectares, followed by Constanța with 2,275 hectares. Galați and Botoșani each added more than 1,400 hectares of new green space.

The 109 new nurseries mean Romania can keep this progress rolling for years to come. These modern facilities will produce the seedlings needed for future planting campaigns, creating a sustainable cycle of forest growth.
