Rome Zoo Serves Frozen Treats to Beat Heat Wave

When the mercury hits 37°C in Rome, even the giraffes need a little extra help staying cool.

At Rome's Bioparco Zoo, keepers are turning heat relief into an art form. Giraffes munch on frozen fruit towers, seals dive into chilled pools, and lemurs nibble icy vegetable treats specially designed to beat the scorching Italian summer.

The zoo introduced the program on June 26 as Italy's health ministry issued its highest heat warning. Staff prepared frozen fish for seals, ice-packed vegetables for hippos and tapirs, and fruit popsicles for the primates and other species.

But this isn't just about comfort. The frozen feasts encourage animals to use their natural foraging behaviors while cooling down, keeping them mentally and physically active during the hottest hours.

Zoological supervisor Yitzhak Yadid explains that some species need even more help. Amphibious animals get access to air-conditioned shelters and water-cooling systems because extreme heat can quickly become life-threatening.

The seals have it particularly good. Their pools are maintained below 25°C year-round, giving them a refreshing escape when temperatures spike. Capybaras and hippos also enjoy specially cooled water zones where they can submerge and regulate their body temperature naturally.
