Ronnie O'Sullivan Chases Record 8th World Title at 50

At 50 years old, Ronnie O'Sullivan is proving that champions don't retire, they just get better with age.

The snooker superstar is competing in the 2026 World Championship starting Saturday, chasing a record-breaking eighth title that would stand alone in the sport's modern history. He currently shares the record of seven championships with Stephen Hendry, who dominated in the 1990s.

O'Sullivan won his first world title in 2001, a quarter century ago. Now, five decades into life, he's still making history and breaking records that younger players can only dream about.

Last month in China, he made a break of 153, the highest score ever recorded in professional snooker. Fellow champion Shaun Murphy watched O'Sullivan compete recently and came away impressed with his sharpness and quality of play.

"When he gets in flow, he is still as good as ever," Murphy said. The 2005 world champion added it would be an incredible achievement if O'Sullivan reaches eight titles, calling it a story everyone wants to write.

O'Sullivan already holds the record as the oldest Crucible final winner after his most recent championship in 2022 at age 46. He'll face Chinese newcomer He Guoqiang in the first round on Tuesday and Wednesday.

John Higgins, 50, said O'Sullivan looks in good nick and could have a big say in the tournament. Williams agreed, saying he wouldn't be surprised if O'Sullivan or Higgins takes home the trophy despite the challenges of age.
