Rosie the Surfing Lab Wins Big at World Championships

Move over, human surfers. One of California's most beloved wave riders has four paws and a wagging tail.

Rosie, a five-year-old golden Labrador Retriever, just claimed four first-place awards at the 10th Annual World Dog Surfing Championships at Pacifica Beach near San Francisco. The competition featured about 15 water-loving dogs competing across small, medium, and large size categories.

Judges scored the furry athletes on wave length, wave size, and overall confidence. And Rosie clearly brought her A-game.

The championship-winning pup started her surfing journey at just seven months old. Owner Steve Drottar, a prosecuting attorney who has surfed Santa Cruz his whole life, first introduced Rosie to the water on a stand-up paddleboard. Over time, she graduated to bigger waves and sharper skills.

Now the dynamic duo hits the waves together four to five times every week. "Here comes some old dude with a stand-up board and a great big cute yellow Lab on the end of the board," Steve said. "It's kind of hard for people not to smile."

Local surfer Jeremiah Kille agrees. "It's a blast to watch them out there," he said.

Rosie has become a bonafide celebrity in the surfing community. Hundreds of spectators lined Pacifica Beach to watch her compete, some wearing T-shirts and hats featuring her picture. Some fans traveled hundreds of miles just to see her in action.

What makes Rosie's story especially heartwarming isn't just her athletic talent. It's what her adventures represent about the human-dog bond.

"What Rosie teaches people is that a dog is more than just being on the couch," Steve explained. "A dog can be part of your life, part of your adventures, however far you want to take it."

That philosophy has created something special between Steve and Rosie. Their shared passion for surfing has built a connection that goes beyond the typical owner-pet relationship.

"Having your dog accomplish something with you develops such an amazing bond," Steve said. "I just hope that I can share some of the joy."

With nearly 340,000 Instagram followers cheering her on, Rosie is definitely spreading that joy far beyond the California coastline.
