Ruby Evans Wins Wales' First Gold After Tearful Setback

Ruby Evans walked off the floor in Glasgow on Tuesday night wearing a sparkling gold costume and Wales' first Commonwealth Games gymnastics gold medal around her neck.

Just two days earlier, the 19-year-old had left the same arena in tears. She'd fallen from second place to sixth in the individual all-around competition after a disastrous beam routine that saw her tumble to the mat. The Cardiff gymnast, one of Team Wales' most recognizable faces with 117,000 Instagram followers, felt the weight of expectations crash down.

"It was like, 'Ruby Evans, Ruby Evans,'" she admitted about the pressure. "I knew there was a bit of pressure on me."

Evans started gymnastics at five years old after her parents needed an outlet for her boundless energy. "She used to somersault off the window sills," her mother Leanne remembered. Fourteen years later, that energetic little girl had competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics as Team GB's youngest squad member and won silver at the 2025 World Championships.

But Glasgow was supposed to be her moment to shine for Wales. Instead, she watched teammates Abigail and Emily Roper make history with bronze medals while she rested a shoulder injury and watched the Love Island finale.

When the floor final came around, Evans was the last of eight competitors to perform. England's Abigail Martin had set a high bar. Six others had tried and failed to beat her score.

Then Evans stepped onto the mat in her golden costume, flashed the Welsh dragon symbol to the crowd, and delivered the performance of her career.

"I feel like I perform better when I have a bit of fire in me," she said. "I went out there like my dragon was absolutely firing."
