Rugby Legend Richie McCaw Now Saves Lives Flying Helicopters

Richie McCaw spent 14 years dominating rugby fields as one of the sport's greatest players, but today you'll find him thousands of feet in the air on a completely different mission.

The two-time World Cup winner who captained New Zealand to back-to-back championships now works full-time as a commercial helicopter pilot in Christchurch. After hanging up his rugby boots in 2015 with 148 international caps to his name, McCaw returned to his childhood passion for flying, taught to him by his grandfather who flew over 300 missions in World War II.

"I've taken a full step back from rugby and I'm pretty much full-time flying helicopters as a commercial pilot now," McCaw told 98fm. "That's now my new day to day gig and it's a lot of fun."

What started as a hobby quickly became something far more meaningful. When an earthquake struck the New Zealand town of Kaikoura in 2016, McCaw found himself flying relief missions, transporting medical supplies and essential resources to isolated communities.

He piloted fire crews to check on stranded residents and assess damaged roads. The rugby legend worked alongside charitable organizations to ensure help reached those who needed it most.

His commitment to service continued when he volunteered as a firefighter during a massive Christmas Day blaze in Canterbury in 2017. Twenty fire engines and five helicopters responded to the incident, with McCaw piloting one of them while his family waited at home.

McCaw's transition shows that real success isn't about clinging to past glory. The man who could have spent decades on the speaking circuit or in comfortable coaching roles chose instead to learn new skills and serve his community in practical, hands-on ways.

He's also delivered milk to four schools by helicopter as part of an education initiative and occasionally returns to rugby to inspire current players. His transformation includes shedding 20 kilograms since retirement, fueled by his passion for cycling and charity events.

Now McCaw splits his time between flying commercial routes as a director and shareholder of Christchurch Helicopters and providing rugby commentary for South African television.

The man who once seemed to defy physics on the rugby field now defies gravity in the cockpit, proving that the best chapters of our lives don't always come when we're in the spotlight.
