Rural Hospital Launches Free Event for Cancer Survivors

A rural hospital in Port Townsend, Washington is proving that world-class cancer care doesn't require a big city address.

Jefferson Healthcare will host its first annual Cancer Survivor Event on June 3, welcoming survivors, caregivers, and families to learn research-backed strategies for life after cancer. The free three-hour gathering reflects a powerful shift in cancer care: survival is just the beginning.

Nearly 19 million Americans now live as cancer survivors, a number that keeps climbing thanks to better screening and treatment. More than 70 percent survive at least five years beyond diagnosis, while nearly half reach the 10-year mark.

"Anyone who has gone through a cancer diagnosis is considered a cancer survivor," said Oncology Director Tricia Sinek. "Survivorship care is about helping people thrive physically, emotionally and mentally after treatment ends."

The June 3 event tackles real challenges survivors face. A registered dietitian will discuss nutrition strategies designed specifically for healing bodies. A physical therapist will guide breast cancer survivors through strength-building techniques that address treatment's lasting effects.

An oncology nurse practitioner will lead a session on partnering effectively with healthcare providers and making informed decisions about ongoing care. Each presentation offers tools survivors can use immediately.

Cancer treatments save lives but can leave lasting impacts on bodies and minds. Survivorship care helps patients navigate those challenges through continued monitoring, rehabilitation plans, and wellness roadmaps tailored to individual needs.
