Rwanda to Host 2028 Africa Blood Transfusion Congress

Rwanda just secured the rights to host one of Africa's most important medical gatherings, beating out two other nations in a competitive bid that recognizes the country's healthcare achievements.

The East African nation will welcome the 13th Africa Society for Blood Transfusion Congress in 2028, bringing together an expected 1,000 delegates from across the continent and beyond. The announcement came during this year's congress in Namibia, where Ethiopia and Nigeria also competed for hosting rights.

The biennial event serves as a crucial meeting ground for doctors, researchers, and blood transfusion specialists across Africa. They gather to share breakthrough discoveries, strengthen blood management systems, and learn from each other's successes in saving lives through better transfusion medicine.

Rwanda last hosted the congress in 2016. Returning to Kigali just 12 years later shows how rapidly the country has advanced its healthcare infrastructure, particularly in biotherapy and blood transfusion research.

Dr. Thomas Muyombo, Director of the Regional Center for Blood Transfusion at the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, called the selection a milestone for the nation's health sector. He emphasized that the congress gives Rwandan doctors direct access to global experts while allowing local researchers to showcase their innovations to colleagues across Africa.

The congress alternates between French-speaking and English-speaking host countries, ensuring diverse scientific communities throughout Africa get equal representation and voice. This approach strengthens collaboration across language barriers and creates a more unified continental healthcare network.
