Saffie Osborne Wins Historic St Leger at 24

Saffie Osborne didn't even know if she'd be riding in the St Leger on Monday morning. By Saturday afternoon, the 24-year-old jockey had made history as the first woman to win one of British Flat racing's five prestigious Classics.

Osborne rode Highwayman to a stunning victory at Doncaster, bursting clear of the field in the final stretch despite 11-1 odds against her. The win came during the 250th anniversary of the world's oldest Classic Flat race, adding even more significance to an already groundbreaking moment.

"I definitely didn't have this on the bingo card this week," Osborne told reporters immediately after crossing the finish line. She was quick to credit trainer Joseph O'Brien for putting his faith in her when others might not have taken the chance.

Osborne's journey to this moment started just six years ago when she began as an apprentice in 2020. Since then, she's racked up impressive achievements, including being crowned leading jockey in the Racing League for three consecutive seasons and becoming the first female jockey to win a race at the Dubai Carnival in 2024.

But no woman had ever won any of the five British Classics before Saturday. Not the 1,000 or 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, not the Oaks or Derby at Epsom, and not the St Leger.

Highwayman's owner John Neocleous was at Doncaster to witness the historic ride. He admitted he'd told Osborne to "go and make history" before the race, but confessed he didn't really believe it would happen.

Osborne's victory proves that barriers only stay in place until someone brave enough crashes through them. Like Rachel Blackmore, who became the first female jockey to win the Grand National, Osborne's name will now be permanently etched in racing folklore.

Racing runs in Osborne's blood—her father Jamie was a top National Hunt jockey, and her mother Katie O'Sullivan is a respected equine artist. But this achievement is entirely her own, earned through skill, determination, and seizing an opportunity when it came.

The win came as a surprise to many, with pre-race favorite Christmas Day finishing ninth. But Osborne rode a perfect finish on the one mile six furlong course, winning by two and a half lengths.
