Samoan Engineer Graduates with Honors from New Zealand

When Timothy Salale Moananu walked across the graduation stage at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, he became the first engineer in a family of accountants and commerce students.

The 24-year-old from Samoa earned his Bachelor of Engineering with honors in forestry, choosing a path his family couldn't help him navigate. His father made it clear from the start: pursue engineering if you want, but don't expect homework help.

"I challenged him and informed him that he will not have any help at home with his studies," said Timothy's father, Alaiasa Sepulona Moananu. "But we will wait no matter how long it takes for him to pursue engineering."

Timothy started his education journey at Marist Brothers School Mulivai before moving to Vaitele Primary School. He attended Samoa College in 2008, then graduated from National University of Samoa before heading to the University of Canterbury.

The fourth of seven children, Timothy now works as a principal engineer at Samoa's Land Transport Authority, where he's been employed since July. He also serves in the youth leadership at Samoa Worship Centre Church.

Sometimes the best support isn't doing the work for someone. It's believing they can do it themselves and waiting as long as it takes. Timothy's father showed that kind of faith, and his son delivered. The whole family now celebrates an engineer among their ranks, proving that taking the road less traveled can lead somewhere special.

Timothy's success shows what happens when young people choose their own path and parents trust the journey, even when they can't guide every step.
