San Antonio Sewing Program Helps People Build New Careers

When someone learns to sew, they're not just threading a needle. They're stitching together a path toward independence and a fresh start.

Catholic Charities in San Antonio is expanding Sewing for Success, a workforce development program that teaches practical sewing skills to help participants launch careers or start their own businesses. The program equips students with hands-on techniques they can use to find meaningful employment or become entrepreneurs.

To fund the expansion, the organization is hosting its first-ever Launch luncheon on September 22, 2026, at Oak Hills Country Club. The event will feature lunch, a raffle, and a chance to buy handcrafted items made by program participants.

The program works by providing practical experience alongside technical training. Students learn valuable skills they can immediately apply to job opportunities or their own ventures. Community partners including SAS Shoes, Richter Goods, and Jon Hart are collaborating to support the initiative.

The Ripple Effect

When one person gains employment skills, entire families benefit. The confidence that comes from mastering a craft extends far beyond the sewing machine. Students in the program aren't just learning to hem pants or repair garments; they're discovering they can build something from scratch and sell it to support themselves.

"By supporting Sewing for Success, you are helping participants build skills, confidence, and new opportunities for their futures," said Ada Saenz, Catholic Charities' president and CEO. The program demonstrates how targeted workforce training can create real pathways out of unemployment.
