San Francisco Startup Builds $10K Electric Dirt Bike

For years, Americans who wanted a quality electric dirt bike had to look overseas or spend big money on premium brands.

That's changing thanks to Dorado Motorsports, a San Francisco startup founded by two lifelong riders who grew up tearing through the Sierra Nevada. Their new V3 electric dirt bike packs genuine off-road capability into a package that costs thousands less than the competition.

The V3 isn't trying to reinvent what a dirt bike should look like. Instead, it focuses on solving the problems that have held electric motorcycles back: weight, range, and downtime between rides.

At just 230 to 260 pounds, the V3 weighs remarkably little for an electric bike carrying a 7.2-kWh battery. That's crucial for off-road riding, where every extra pound makes the bike harder to handle on challenging terrain.

The bike delivers 48 horsepower and hits 80 mph, with over 70 miles of trail range. Those numbers put it well above entry-level electric bikes while keeping the price reasonable for weekend riders and club racers.

But the real breakthrough is the swappable battery. Instead of waiting hours to recharge during an all-day riding session, riders can swap in a fresh battery and get back on the trail immediately. Even with its two-hour charge time, the option to swap batteries changes how people can use electric bikes for serious off-road adventures.

The V3 comes with premium KYB suspension offering over 12 inches of travel front and rear, hydraulic disc brakes, and a traditional motocross setup with a 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear. The battery integrates cleanly into the frame rather than looking like an afterthought bolted onto the chassis.

The Ripple Effect

Dorado's entry into the market signals something bigger than one new motorcycle. As more American startups tackle electric off-road bikes, they're driving prices down while pushing innovation forward. The swappable battery approach could become standard across the industry, solving one of the biggest headaches facing electric vehicle adoption in recreational sports.

At $10,499, the V3 costs less than established competitors while delivering the performance serious riders expect. It proves that American manufacturers can compete in a segment long dominated by European brands.
