Sanger High Wins First State Title in 120-Year History
A small-town California volleyball team just rewrote their school's record books. Sanger High's boys volleyball squad captured the first state championship in the school's 120-year history, becoming the first Central Valley team ever to claim the title.
For 120 years, Sanger High School waited for this moment. Last Saturday, their boys volleyball team delivered, defeating Francis Parker of San Diego in four sets to claim the school's first-ever state championship.
The victory carries weight far beyond one trophy. Sanger became the first team from California's Central Valley to win a boys volleyball state title and the first sports team from the school to even reach a state championship game.
"We were like, we're going to be the first team. That really motivated us," said sophomore Troy Hingano. The Apaches carried that pressure and turned it into fuel throughout their historic season.
For junior Ryan Vang, the moment of victory brought everything into focus. "When the realization finally hit, it was like, dang, we really did it. All the hours, all the hard work, everything that we've sacrificed with our coaches and everything, we finally did it," he said.
The win also signals something bigger for teams outside California's traditional sports powerhouses. "I think it just means like, we can play. It's not just SoCal or LA," Hingano explained.

Head coach Scott Okada watched his team transform throughout the season. "I don't know if we've seen a group improve as much as they did this season. You could just see the belief build as the season went on," he said.
The Ripple Effect
This championship matters beyond Sanger's gym. For young athletes across the Central Valley, the Apaches proved that geography doesn't determine greatness.
"It's the buzz and excitement, but it's also the pride that you're representing the valley. It's a really cool thing," Vang said. Players understand they're carrying the hopes of communities often overlooked in California's sports landscape.
With only three graduating seniors, the future looks bright. The young roster returns next season with championship experience and the confidence that comes from making history.
"It's kind of neat for these boys to know like, hey, they've done something special. Even if we come from this small town, we can still do amazing things," Okada said.
A 120-year wait ended with one perfect weekend, and for Sanger High, it might just be the beginning.
