Santa Barbara Unveils Some of California's Fastest EV Chargers
A public library in Santa Barbara just got four ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers that rank among the speediest on California's Central Coast. Powered entirely by clean energy, the new charging station makes going electric easier for the whole community.
Santa Barbara's Eastside Library now hosts four of the fastest public EV chargers on California's Central Coast, making it easier than ever for residents to make the switch to electric vehicles.
The new charging station features four 400-kilowatt DC fast chargers, all powered by 100% carbon-free electricity through Santa Barbara Clean Energy. Located in the heart of the Eastside Neighborhood at 1102 E. Montecito St., these chargers can top up electric vehicles in a fraction of the time older models require.
The city celebrated the completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 26. Community members gathered to mark this milestone in expanding Santa Barbara's clean transportation infrastructure.
"Expanding the City's charging network helps make electric vehicle ownership more practical for community members, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and improves local air quality," said Jefferson Litten, Energy & Climate Division Manager. The project specifically targets one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: the fear of running out of charge without convenient places to power up.
The $500,000 project received funding from multiple state sources, including the California Energy Commission and Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. The investment represents California's ongoing commitment to building the infrastructure needed for a clean energy future.

The project brought together an impressive team of collaborators. The City's Energy & Climate division planned it, the Santa Barbara Public Library hosted it, and Carbon Solutions Group delivered it through a public-private partnership. Electric Vehicle Infrastructures handled construction with support from Southern California Edison, and the chargers operate through CSG's DirtRoad charging network.
The Ripple Effect
This charging station does more than just fill up cars. By placing ultra-fast chargers at a public library, Santa Barbara is making clean transportation accessible to everyone, not just homeowners who can install private charging stations.
The location choice matters too. Libraries serve as community hubs where people already spend time, making it convenient to charge while checking out books, attending programs, or using other services. This integration of clean energy infrastructure into everyday community spaces helps normalize electric vehicles as a practical choice for all residents.
As more cities follow Santa Barbara's lead in building robust charging networks, the transition to clean transportation becomes less daunting for families considering their next vehicle purchase.
Santa Barbara's newest charging station proves that building a cleaner future can be fast, accessible, and powered entirely by the sun and wind.
