Santa Maria Seeks Volunteers for April 25 Service Day
Santa Maria's 17th annual volunteer day brings neighbors together to beautify parks, help seniors, and spread kindness across the city. Registration is now open for the April 25 event.
Hundreds of volunteers will fan out across Santa Maria on April 25 to paint playgrounds, clean parks, and help seniors with home repairs during the city's 17th annual day of service.
Serve Santa Maria invites residents of all ages to join the community-wide effort, which has become a beloved tradition connecting neighbors through acts of kindness. The event welcomes families, students, and community groups looking to make a tangible difference in their city.
Volunteers will meet at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center between 8:30 and 9 a.m. for check-in and light refreshments before heading to their assigned projects. Organizer Pastor Carl Nielsen says most volunteers complete their work in just 2.5 to 3 hours and leave feeling deeply satisfied.
"What we do is really share kindness and love with people who could use some help as well as just blessing our city," Nielsen said.
Projects this year include spreading bark at multiple parks, painting colorful playground maps at local schools, removing graffiti, picking up litter, and helping seniors with fence repairs and yard cleanup. These improvements address needs that city budgets can't always cover, Nielsen notes.

The Ripple Effect
The impact extends far beyond fresh paint and clean parks. High school students who initially sign up for community service hours often discover something unexpected: the joy of helping others.
"They end up catching the vision of, 'oh, this is really cool helping somebody else out,'" Nielsen said. Many volunteers return year after year, building lasting connections with neighbors they meet while working side by side.
That sense of community ownership matters just as much as the completed projects. Nielsen describes a "super high of gratitude" watching people donate their time and abilities to improve their shared home.
For those who can't wait until April 25, a smaller opportunity awaits on April 11, when 10 to 12 volunteers are needed to paint playground stencils at two elementary schools. Registration is open online now, and projects will close once they reach capacity.
The work continues year-round, with the next citywide service day already scheduled for September 12.
