Sarasota Rallies to Save 26-Year Restaurant After Fire

Hours after a fire destroyed their 26-year-old restaurant, the Senenoi family watched something unexpected unfold outside Pacific Rim.

Dozens of Sarasota neighbors arrived with gloves and determination. They came to help owner Veth Senenoi, who has served the community since 1998, pick up the pieces of his devastated business.

By noon on Saturday, volunteers had filled two 20-foot dumpsters with debris. No contractors. No cleanup crews. Just community members who couldn't stand by while a local fixture suffered.

"It was not a contractor that did all that, it was a community that came together and really helped out," said Iris Klicic of RidgeCP, who coordinated the effort.

Senenoi stood among the ruins, still processing the loss. "I never thought it would be this devastating," he said, surveying what remained of his life's work.

The fire hit especially close to home for some volunteers. Betsy Tilemeier and her husband John had eaten dinner at Pacific Rim just hours before the flames tore through the building.

"We sat at this table," Tilemeier said, pointing to charred remains. "I just can't imagine the impact for this family."

The Ripple Effect

The swift community response shows how deeply Pacific Rim wove itself into Sarasota's fabric over nearly three decades. When Tilemeier told friends about the fire, their immediate reaction was "Oh my god, I love that place."

That love translated into action. Volunteers didn't wait for organized relief efforts or official cleanup schedules. They simply showed up, ready to work.

The outpouring extends beyond physical help. Donation funds have been established to support the Senenoi family as they plan their next steps.

After 26 years of feeding Sarasota, the community is making sure Pacific Rim's story doesn't end in ashes.
