Saskatchewan Mom Survived Deadly Hantavirus 20 Years Ago

When doctors told Lorinda Nordstrom to get her end-of-life affairs in order, she refused to give up on her young children.

The White Fox, Saskatchewan woman had contracted hantavirus, a rare rodent-borne disease, while cleaning her friend's farm two decades ago. What started as flu-like symptoms quickly escalated to a severe cough with blood, temporary blindness, and an inability to stand.

A paramedic friend rushed her to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the diagnosis. But with no specific treatment or vaccine available, medical staff could only quarantine her for seven days while her body fought the infection on its own.

"They sent me home with no help, no treatment, and told me to get my end of life in order, which is very scary as a young mom," Nordstrom told CTV News. The extreme body aches during quarantine felt endless, and the fear was overwhelming.

But Nordstrom survived. Her immune system won the battle that claims many hantavirus patients.

Today, she's using her second chance at life to educate others. Following recent news of a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship, Nordstrom spoke publicly about her experience to help Canadians understand the disease's warning signs.

Hantavirus spreads mainly through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. It can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which affects the lungs and requires immediate medical attention including rest, hydration, and breathing support.
