Saudi Arabia Breaks Ground on $490M Contemporary Art Museum
A new world-class art museum is taking shape in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia's historic district, as part of a $63 billion transformation into a global cultural destination. The 45,000-square-meter museum aims to put contemporary Middle Eastern art on the world stage.
Saudi Arabia just awarded a $490 million contract to build a stunning new contemporary art museum in the heart of its historic capital. The project signals a major commitment to making art and culture accessible in a region once known more for oil than galleries.
The Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art will rise in Diriyah, the 18th-century capital on Riyadh's western edge. A joint venture between Egypt's Hassan Allam Holding and Saudi Arabia's AlBawani Holding Company won the contract to bring this vision to life.
The museum will span 45,252 square meters of floor space, with a total built-up area of 77,428 square meters. It sits at the center of a $63 billion plan to transform Diriyah into a world-class cultural and tourism destination by 2028.
Jerry Inzerillo, who leads the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, compared the ambitions to global landmarks. "We'll have our Louvre, which is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Contemporary Art Museum," he said, also noting plans for a Sydney Opera House-style venue designed by renowned Norwegian firm Snøhetta.

The project comes as Saudi Arabia prepares to host 15 million people in its capital ahead of the 2030 World Expo. Diriyah's transformation includes creating what officials call the "Beverly Hills of Riyadh" in the exclusive Wadi Safar quarter.
Why This Inspires
This museum represents more than bricks and mortar. It's a statement that contemporary art from the Middle East deserves a world-stage platform, creating opportunities for regional artists to share their voices globally.
The project also brings together Egyptian and Saudi expertise, showing how cross-border collaboration can build something meaningful. When nations invest in culture and creativity, they're investing in bridges between people.
The museum will give millions of visitors a chance to experience contemporary Middle Eastern art they might never have encountered otherwise.
