Saudi Arabia: Over Half of Ramadan Donations Now Digital

Charitable giving during Ramadan just got a modern upgrade in Saudi Arabia, and the results are transforming how people help those in need.

Digital platforms now account for more than half of all donations during Islam's holiest month, according to Abdulaziz Al-Nuami, CEO of the Al-Wedad Charity Association. What once required visiting donation centers or mailing checks now happens with a few taps on a smartphone.

The shift has been dramatic. Saudi Arabia's national Ehsan Platform alone has collected roughly $4 billion since launching in 2021. Another initiative, Jood Eskan, lets people instantly donate toward housing for vulnerable families.

Young donors are leading the charge. Al-Nuami reports seeing significant growth among younger people who find digital giving aligns naturally with their tech-focused lifestyles. They're making smaller donations more frequently throughout the month rather than one large contribution.

Reem Al-Sehly, a regular donor, says the platforms changed how she gives. "With just one click I can donate to several causes," she explains. She appreciates seeing specific cases listed online, from families struggling with debt to campaigns building water wells as ongoing charity for deceased loved ones.

The Ripple Effect

The technology isn't just convenient for donors. Charities can now deliver aid faster, measure their impact more accurately, and gather feedback from people receiving help. Digital systems have cut the time and resources needed to process donations and launch programs.

Transparency builds trust too. Verified digital systems show donors exactly where their money goes, while charities publish regular reports tracking the impact. All projects get approval from the National Center for Non-Profit Sector Development, which oversees governance across Saudi Arabia's nonprofit sector.

Al-Sehly says this visibility matters. "These platforms are trusted, and we can see the cases listed and follow them until they are closed," she notes. The confidence that help reaches people who truly need it keeps her coming back.

The variety of giving options appeals to modern donors as well. Platforms offer ways to contribute money, food, or clothing, making charitable giving accessible to people with different resources and interests.
