Saudi Arabia Sends Relief to 120K Earthquake Survivors

When a 7.8 magnitude earthquake tore through Mindanao on June 8, it didn't just shake the ground. It destroyed over 700 million pesos worth of homes, schools, and hospitals, leaving more than 120,000 people without basic shelter or sanitation.

Now, help is arriving from 6,000 miles away. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed an agreement with the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development on July 28 to provide critical relief supplies to the hardest-hit communities.

Through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, Saudi Arabia will deliver 15,500 hygiene kits, 15,500 shelter kits, and 150 mobile latrines to displaced families. The supplies will reach communities in South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, and Davao Occidental, where thousands still live in temporary relief sites.

"We are thankful to the government of Saudi Arabia for this big help," said South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr., whose province saw dozens of buildings reduced to rubble. The tremor triggered landslides in mountain villages and claimed more than 30 lives across the region.

General Santos City and Koronadal City, two of Mindanao's largest urban centers, suffered extensive damage to vital infrastructure. Hospitals struggled to treat the injured while families camped outside their destroyed homes, afraid to return to unstable structures.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership reflects a deeper bond between Saudi Arabia and the Philippines. As a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Saudi Arabia has long supported peace efforts in Muslim-majority areas of Mindanao, including backing agreements with the Moro National Liberation Front and Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza praised the collaboration, noting how international solidarity strengthens local recovery efforts. When disaster strikes, these connections transform into lifelines for communities that might otherwise wait months for assistance.

The mobile latrines address a critical but often overlooked need in disaster zones, where sanitation prevents disease outbreaks. The shelter kits provide materials for temporary housing, giving families protection from monsoon rains while permanent homes are rebuilt.

Regional officials are coordinating the distribution through local disaster management offices, ensuring supplies reach the most vulnerable first. The partnership between DSWD's Disaster Response Management Bureau and the Saudi Embassy demonstrates how diplomatic relationships can deliver tangible results when crisis strikes.

For 120,000 Filipinos facing uncertain futures after losing everything, these supplies represent more than relief—they're a reminder that recovery begins with simple dignities restored, one family at a time.
