Saudi Program Lifts 92,000 Rural Families with $640M

Saudi Arabia's rural farming communities are thriving thanks to a program that's proven government support can create lasting change when done right.

Since launching in 2019, Saudi REEF has supported more than 92,000 people across the Kingdom with over 2.4 billion Saudi riyals (roughly $640 million USD). The program focuses on sustainable agriculture, helping small-scale farmers and rural households build better lives through smarter use of natural resources.

The results speak for themselves. Average annual income for small rural producers jumped from about $2,500 in 2018 to more than $3,600 by 2024, a 45% increase that's changing what's possible for farming families. By 2030, projections show incomes could reach $5,300 annually.

The program supports eight key agricultural areas including beekeeping, livestock breeding, fisheries, and Saudi coffee production. Together, these sectors generated a combined market value exceeding $1.5 billion by 2025, proving that investing in rural communities strengthens the entire economy.

Minister Abdulrahman Al-Fadley oversees the initiative, which operates as part of Saudi Vision 2030's goals to diversify the economy and improve quality of life beyond major cities. The program doesn't just hand out money but provides training, resources, and ongoing support to help farmers succeed long-term.

The Ripple Effect

The program's impact extends far beyond individual farms. By strengthening food security and creating local employment, Saudi REEF is helping rural areas become economically vibrant rather than places people leave behind.

Women have been the biggest winners, accounting for roughly 75% of all beneficiaries. Nearly 50,000 women have received direct support and training packages designed to boost their economic participation and financial independence. This aligns perfectly with national goals to expand women's role in the workforce.

International recognition followed the results. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization awarded Saudi REEF its Technical Cooperation Award for pioneering work in promoting food security through innovative sustainable practices. The program even earned a Guinness World Record for operating the world's largest demonstration farm by area in the Asir region, covering more than 3.2 million square meters.

The success proves that when programs combine financial support with skills training and sustainable practices, rural communities don't just survive but flourish.
