SC State Flag Flies Over State House After Bowl Win

For the first time ever, a historically black college flag is flying over South Carolina's State House, and it's there because of an incredible championship win.

South Carolina State University defeated Prairie View A&M 40-38 in a nail-biting four-overtime thriller at the Celebration Bowl on Saturday. Ryan Stubblefield connected with Jordan Smith on a two-point conversion in the fourth overtime to seal the victory and claim the HBCU national championship.

But the celebration didn't stop when the confetti settled. Governor Henry McMaster approved a historic request to raise the SC State Bulldogs flag over the State House dome in Columbia, marking a powerful first for the state.

"It's a powerful symbol of excellence, resilience and bulldog pride," said Miss South Carolina State University Olivia Ruff at Monday's flag-raising ceremony. "This achievement reflects the discipline, teamwork, and determination that define SC State both on and off the field."

State Senator Deon Tedder, an SC State alum who pushed for the flag honor, connected the moment to a deeper legacy. He tied Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s passion for education to the historic flag-raising, noting that King understood institutions like SC State are "engines of hope."

The university will hold a victory parade Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., starting near the Orangeburg County Library and ending at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The team will receive the State House flag during the celebration, bringing home both the championship trophy and a piece of history.

This victory reaches far beyond the football field. The Celebration Bowl showcases excellence at HBCUs, institutions that have been educating and empowering students for generations despite facing historical underfunding and systemic barriers.
