Over three days of outdoor testing, the system matched a perfectly entangled state with 94 percent accuracy.

The Ripple Effect

This discovery arrives at a critical moment. Data centers already strain power grids worldwide, and quantum computers demand even more energy than traditional systems. By cutting out the electrical-to-optical conversion step, sunlight-powered quantum tech could transform that equation.

Satellites could generate unbreakable quantum encryption keys using the sunlight already streaming past them in space. Remote locations without reliable electricity could access quantum computing power. The technology that seemed destined to worsen our energy crisis might instead run on renewable power from day one.

The team acknowledges their photon pairs don't quite match the quality of the best laser systems yet. But Li attributes that gap to imperfect optical components, not the sunlight itself. Better engineering will close the difference.

Now they're working to boost the brightness and quality toward a device ready for real-world deployment. "Sunlight is just there," Li says. "We just cut out the middleman and let sunlight do all the work."

The future of computing might be brighter than we thought.
