Scientists Discover Mystery Cells That Only Exist in Pregnancy

Scientists just discovered a type of cell that exists nowhere else in the human body except during pregnancy, and they're not entirely sure what it does yet.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco created the most detailed map ever of how the placenta and uterus change throughout pregnancy. While analyzing over a million cells from weeks 5 to 39 of pregnancy, they stumbled upon something entirely new.

"We asked around – no one knows what they are," said Dr. Jingjing Li, who led the study published in the journal Nature. The cells don't exist in the uterus outside of pregnancy, but they suddenly multiply when a woman conceives.

The team discovered these cells appear to act like a "speed bump" at the crucial junction where mom meets baby. As pregnancy begins, fetal cells need to invade the uterine lining to establish blood flow to the placenta. This invasion needs to happen at just the right pace. Too slow or too fast, and serious complications like preeclampsia can occur.

That's where these mystery cells come in. They seem to regulate this delicate process by sending specific signals to other cells, controlling how quickly the invasion proceeds.

The researchers also noticed something intriguing. These cells carry receptors that respond to cannabinoids like THC and CBD. This could help explain why cannabis use during pregnancy has been linked to reduced blood flow to the placenta, preterm birth, and low birth weight.

This atlas represents a monumental leap forward in understanding pregnancy at the molecular level. For the first time, scientists can see the complete timeline of how specialized tissues grow and adapt to support new life.

The research team used machine learning to predict cell behavior based on gene activity. They can now identify which specific cells are most vulnerable to pregnancy complications by matching their findings with huge genetics studies.

Study author Cheng Wang, a regeneration medicine specialist, called the discovery an "exciting moment." These cells sit at the frontline of where maternal and fetal tissues meet, sending out proteins that appear to orchestrate the complex dance of early pregnancy.

The findings open new doors for preventing pregnancy complications. By understanding exactly which cells use genes linked to preeclampsia, preterm birth, and pregnancy loss, researchers can develop more targeted treatments.

What started as a mapping project became a treasure hunt that revealed how much we still have to learn about the remarkable transformations that happen during pregnancy.
