
Scientists Find Two 'Ghost' Ancestors in Our DNA

Researchers at UC Berkeley developed a new method called TRACE that works backward from modern human genomes to reconstruct missing pieces of our family tree. By analyzing DNA from over 500 people across Africa, Europe, and Asia, they found genetic fingerprints from two completely unknown human relatives.
The first "ghost" ancestor interbred with Homo sapiens in Africa more than 50,000 years ago, before our species migrated out of the continent. This mysterious lineage contributes about 0.5% to 1% of the DNA in people living today, roughly the same amount as Neanderthal DNA found in many modern humans.
The second discovery reaches even further back in time. This "super-archaic" ancestor split from our family tree approximately 1.8 million years ago and interbred with Denisovans in Eurasia more than 200,000 years ago. Some of its DNA eventually reached modern humans when our ancestors interbred with Denisovans.
Unlike Neanderthals and Denisovans, whose existence we know from fossil remains and recovered DNA, these lineages are pure genetic ghosts. They left no physical evidence, only traces in our genes that scientists can now finally read.

Associate Professor Priya Moorjani, who co-authored the study published in Science, says our genomes are mosaics containing little bits of DNA from all our ancestors. The TRACE method can search these mosaics for clues that previous techniques missed entirely.
The researchers found traces of the more recent ghost ancestry in every population they studied, suggesting this lineage played a significant role in shaping modern humanity. Gene flow between different groups appears far more common than scientists previously thought.
While researchers cannot yet name which specific hominin populations these lineages belonged to, they've narrowed down candidates based on when the lineages diverged from our family tree.
