Scientists Predict Where Next Major Earthquake Will Strike

Scientists just proved they can predict where the next major earthquake will strike, offering coastal communities a powerful new tool to prepare for natural disasters.

Researchers at the University of California Riverside tested a groundbreaking algorithm on a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake that hit Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, 2025. The quake was the largest seismic event since Japan's devastating Tōhoku earthquake in 2011, though it caused far less damage.

Geophysicists Axel Periollat and Gareth Funning used satellite technology to measure strain building along the fault line for decades before the quake hit. Their algorithm correctly identified exactly where the earthquake would eventually strike.

The science behind it is surprisingly straightforward. Faults quietly accumulate stress for years before an earthquake happens, and this strain can be measured from space using GPS and advanced radar technology that detects changes in Earth's surface down to the millimeter.

The Kamchatka region provided an ideal test case. The fault hadn't experienced a comparable earthquake since 1952, giving it 73 years to build up measurable strain along the subduction zone where the Pacific plate slides under the Okhotsk plate.

"We had an idea where the strain was accumulating based on a relatively limited data set," Periollat explained. "Seeing it work so well confirmed that this approach has real potential."

The model can't yet predict when an earthquake will happen or how severe resulting tsunamis might be. Better data collection from underwater faults could improve these predictions in the future.

This breakthrough offers something earthquake-prone communities have never had before: the ability to know which sections of fault lines face the greatest risk. Cities and towns near stressed regions can now strengthen infrastructure, update emergency plans, and prepare residents years before disaster strikes.

For millions living along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 25,000-mile stretch of seafloor producing three quarters of the world's earthquakes, this research transforms uncertainty into actionable knowledge. Southern California, Japan, Chile, and other vulnerable regions can focus resources where they're needed most.

The algorithm works with relatively limited data, meaning it can be applied to subduction zones worldwide without requiring massive new infrastructure investments.

"Your peace of mind shouldn't come from believing we can forecast the exact earthquake," Funning noted. "There is no substitute for preparation."
