Scottish Cyclist Wins Gold After Dramatic Crash in Final Race

When Neil Fachie hit the velodrome floor in a brutal crash during his final race, it looked like Scotland's greatest Para-cyclist might end his career with bleeding knees and a broken dream. Instead, he got back up and won gold.

Fachie and pilot Aaron Pope were competing in the tandem B sprint final at Glasgow's Commonwealth Games when their wheel clipped their Welsh opponents. The collision sent both riders tumbling, their helmets flying as the sickening thud echoed through the arena.

The crowd went silent. Fachie's rage was visible from across the velodrome as he exited the track with torn gear and blood running down his legs.

But then something shifted. Pope pulled his teammate aside for a quiet word, and moments later, the duo reappeared for the deciding race.

"Adrenaline is a wonderful thing," Fachie said afterward, describing the "little slide" that left him battered but determined. "It created a lot of anger, but we were so fired up to prove a point."

Fachie had already retired once after the Paris Olympics. He came back for one final performance at home in Glasgow, where his Commonwealth career started, knowing this would be the end.

His wife Lora appeared on the big screen moments after the win, exhaling with relief. "It's just a relief it's over," she said, capturing what everyone felt.
